The NHL's Three Stars of the week ending Jan 19, 2020, are Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, Elvis Merzlikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Absolutely dominating this week was Alex Ovechkin, who didn't have time to dish out assists because he was too busy scoring. He led the league with 8 goals, all which came in the form of multi-goal performances. This was the first time in his career to post multi-goal performances three games in a row. He posted 2 goals versus the Carolina Hurricanes before potting back to back hat tricks against the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. His eight-goal performance also moved him into the top 10 NHL's all-time list, surpassing the legends of Teemu Selanne and Mario Lemieux. He is currently tied with Steve Yzerman at 692, and only 40 goals away from sliding into the top 5 of all-time.
Merzlikins has taken the starting role in Columbus extremely well since Korpisalo was moved to the IR. This week he was on fire, posting a 34 save shutout against the Boston Bruins. This was actually a back to back shut out from his start on Jan 11, and he became the second rookie in franchise history to post two consecutive shutouts. He sealed the victory with a 3-2 win against the Hurricanes before giving yet another doughnut to the New Jersey Devils in a 41 shot, 5-0 win. That gave Elvis 3 shut outs in 4 starts, adding himself to an elite rookie list to do so. He finished the week with a 0.67 GAA and .982 SV%. The Latvia goaltender moved his team into the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and improved his record to 8 wins and a 2.36 GAA, .928 SV%.
Toews topped all NHL skaters this week with 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists) in four games. He posted two apples and the overtime winner against the Ottawa Senators. He sneaked one assist against the Montreal Canadiens and again versus the Winnipeg Jets. Toews then buried two goals and two assists in a 6-2 Victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. A huge part of the Blackhawks organization, Toews is only one point away from being the sixth Blackhawk to record 800 points. He improved his record for this season to 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists) in a total of 50 games played.
