The NHL's Three Stars of the week ending Jan 5, 2020, and the first three of the new year are Nathan Mackinnon, Mark Scheifele, and Zack Werenski.
MacKinnon played in three games this week and tallied multiple points in each appearance to finish with 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists). In his first game against the Jets, he scored 2 goals but unfortunately ended up losing the game 7-4. He had one heck of a game against the Blues, however, posting 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists). The last time an Avalanche player posted four or more four-point games within the first half of the season (41 games) was Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic during the 1995-96 season. He finished off the week with 2 apples in the Avalanche's victory over the New Jersey Devils. Nathan is looking to snag his first Art Ross Trophy and is only one point behind the two Oilers' leaders, McDavid and Draisaitl, after finishing up this week.
Scheifele also posted 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists), as well as recording multiple points in each of his three games. Unfortunately, he was muscled out of the first star of the week by MacKinnon, therefore easily taking the second star of the week. In his game against the Colorado Avalanche, Schiefele scored one goal and dished three assists to obtain his fourth career four-point performance. He scored one goal and one assist in the remaining two games of the week, both of which were losses to the Maple Leafs and Wild. Among all Jet skaters, Schiefele holds the lead with a total of 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 42 games played.
It was a big week for the Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman, who scored 5 goals in 3 games. There have only been two other defensemen in the last 10 years who have scored five or more goals in a three-game span, Brent Burns in 2017 and Lubomir Visnovsky in 2011. Zach is now also the first blueliner to achieve this feat within the franchise. He potted his first career hat trick to start the week against the Florida Panthers before going scoreless in his game against the Boston Bruins. He then came back and scored two goals in the Jackets' 3-2 loss against the San Jose Sharks. After this week, he has 13 goals, 12 assists, and only trails the Preds defensemen Roman Josi in most goals scored from the blue line (14).

Werenski can be seen using pretty much the exact same gear as Scheifele, aside from the hockey gloves. The newest 4-roll glove from Warrior, the Alpha DX, showcases Impax protection. A combination of high-end VN foam and hard, plastic inserts, offer pro-level protection to blocked shots, slashes, and hooks. Underneath is a pro-preferred Clarino palm for a true hand-stick connection all game long.
