The NHL's Three Stars of the week ending Feb 09, 2020, are Elvis Merzlikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Kyle Connor of the Winnipeg Jets, and Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With Jonas Korpisalo still on the injured reserve, Merzlikins has stepped up into the starting role with absolute dominance. He posted a 0.67 GAA and .971 SV% in 3 games, sealing two victories with doughnuts which were against the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings. He finished the week with a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. He now leads the league with five shutouts, which were all accomplished in an eight-game span. He has kept the Blue Jackets playoff dreams alive and improved his record to 12-7-4, a 2.19 GAA, .930 SV%.
The only player to make the NHL's Three Stars of the week is left-winger of the Winnipeg Jets, Kyle Connor. He scored three goals and dished five assists to lead the league with eight points. His performance helped the Jets crawl their way into the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. He went scoreless in his first game against the Nashville Predators and tallied one assist in the Jet's 4-2 victory over the Blues. Over the weekend the Jet's played back-to-back games where Connor did his damage. He recorded 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators followed by 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) in his game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Since he recorded at least three points in games that were played on back-to-back days, Connor became the seventh player in franchise history to do so, and the third player since the club moved to Winnipeg. Kyle Connor now sits at 59 points (28 goals, 31 assists) and only two goals away from producing his third consecutive 30 goal season, which would make him the third player in the Jets/Thrashers history to do so.
Wrapping up this week is Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had a solid week and guided his team to three wins and into third overall place in the NHL. He had a 1.67 GAA and a .936 SV% with victories over the Vegas Golden Knights, Pittsburgh Penguins, and New York Islanders. These were all home game wins which improved his record to eight straight home wins, matching the franchise record. Vasilevskiy holds an incredible record of 29-9-3 with a 2.48 GAA, a .918 SV%, and 2 SO in 41 games.
