Happy New Year! To finish off the year of 2019 and the decade for the NHL's Three Stars of the week are Victor Hedman, Jordan Binnington, and John Tavares.
Hedman, who is on fire lately, posted 8 points (2 goals, 6 assists) which led all skaters within the league. He recorded a 3 point game against the Florida Panthers to open the week, followed by a career-high 4 assist performance against the Montreal Canadiens. The third game he finished off with 1 apple against the Detroit Red Wings, helping the Lightning to a perfect week. He is on his way to a Norris Trophy candidate and ranks third in scoring among NHL defensemen at 37 points (9 goals, 28 assists) in 35 games.
The NHL's Second Star has been given to Jordan Binnington, the St.Louis Blues goaltender and reigning Stanley Cup Champion. He posted a perfect week, 3-0-0 by defeating the Los Angeles Kings (4-1) and the Winnipeg Jets twice (5-4, 4-1). He finished the week with a 1.96 GAA and .929 SV%. Binnington is closing out the 2019 calendar year with the most regular-season wins, and the most ever by a Blues goaltender, 43. He currently has a 2.39 GAA (ranked 4th) and a .921 SV% (ranked 6th).
The NHL's Third Star and the last one of the decade is Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tavares. He was right behind Hedman with 7 points in three games (2 goals, 5 assists). In the high scoring game against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tavares took part in the first three of Toronto's goals (1 goal, 2 assists). This was all done within the first five minutes of the game, establishing a franchise record for the fastest three points. He tallied another 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) against the New Jersey Devils before finishing off the week with 1 assist against the New York Rangers. After this week, John has 15 goals, 18 assists for a total of 33 points in 33 GP.
