It's happening. The NHL season could very well be halted and teams could potentially be locked in the standings. If this were the case and the NHL Playoffs were to begin as is, who would be in and who would be out!? In the NHL scoring race, who would take home the most sought after trophies and what gear are they using? Here at IW Hockey, we have kept our ears perked and eyes peeled for the latest news on the current NHL season.
PRESIDENTS TROPHY
The NHL regular season is one of the most physically demanding journeys in all sports and is quite the accomplishment to come out as number one. Boston Bruins would take the 2019-20 President's Trophy and seal home-ice advantage in all four rounds of playoffs... granted they make it that far. Taking home this Trophy doesn't necessarily mean an easy Stanley Cup playoff race, as only eight President Trophy winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. The Chicago Blackhawks in 2012-13 were the last President Trophy winners to win the Cup and we all saw how the Tampa Bay Lightning were destroyed last season.
ROUND 1 - WESTERN CONFERENCE
Highlighted Matchups:
We would have an amazing first round within the Western Conference, seeing the Battle of Alberta come to playoff fruition. As Pacific Division rivals are pitted against each other, all eyes would be on Tkachuk and Kassian, who would ferociously battle it out as both teams salivate at their chance for the Stanley Cup. We would see Binnington, defending Stanley Cup champ, campaign against Saros, who's won 7 of his last 10 games, including 2 shutouts. Nashville would have barely made it, just slipping past Vancouver and Minnesota.
ROUND 1 - EASTERN CONFERENCE
Highlighted Matchups:
The Eastern Conference holds some pretty awesome matchups too... if they were to begin as is. My eyes would be on the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes, as this would be a round one re-match from last year, and even having both teams sitting in the same seeding positions. Carolina went on to the Conference final before being nudged out by the Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes currently sit at the first Wild Card position, and Washington holding the Metropolitan number one spot. Then we would have the Bruins versus the Blue Jackets. These teams met in the second round last year, with the Bruins moving on to the Stanley Cup Final before losing in game 7 to the St. Louis Blues. Then we have the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs, where both teams lost in the first round last season. One of them will have the chance to move on while the other will go home short-handed yet again.
ART ROSS TROPHY
Leon Draisaitl would currently take home the Art Ross Trophy, who sits at a total of 110 points (43 goals, 67 assists). This is 5 more points than he tallied last year and in 11 fewer games played. He recently had his first four-goal game and second career five-point night on March 2, against the Nashville Predators.
MAURICE "ROCKET" RICHARD TROPHY
We currently have a tie and would run into the same scenario Crosby had with Stamkos back in 2009-10. As the season currently sits, Alex Ovechkin and David Pastrnak both have 48 goals. This would be Ovechkin's ninth Richard Trophy in his outstanding goal-scoring career and Pastrnaks first.
